Eusebio was born in Mozambique in 1942. His playing skills were at a very high level even if he was only 18 when Benfica sent their coach to Mozambique to scout him. Bela Guttmann was really impressed by what he saw and decided to bring the player to his team.

Eusebio was the key factor for Benfica's success the following years. The "Black Panther" scored 319 goals in 313 matches for his team, but he was unlucky to participate in only one World Cup: 1966 World Cup. Eusebio was really brilliant at this tournament, scoring 9 goals (he won the Golden Boot award) and helping Portugal reach the semi finals. In a match against England at Wembley, Portugal was eliminated even though Eusebio managed to score against the great english goalkeeper Gordon Banks. The English were so impressed by Eusebio's performances that he was immediately added to the Madame Tussauds collection of waxwork.

Portugal failed to qualify to the final stage of the 1970 & 1974 World Cup and Eusebio's last game for Portugal was a 2-2 draw against Bulgaria on October 1973.
