Emilio Butragueno

Emilio Butragueno is a retired Spanish striker born in 1963. He is known for both his club and his international career in the Spanish national team. As a club player he was nicknamed El Buitre (the Vulture) and together with four of his colleagues he formed the famous Quinta del Buitre.

His club career began in 1981 with the youth team of Real Madrid. He made his senior debut in 1984 and he had an impressive first match in which he scored twice and contributed to the third goal. In the same year he also played in his first European competition. Butragueno had impressive achievements with Real Madrid: he won La Liga five times, la Copa del Rey 2 times, Copa de la Liga once, Supercopa de Espana four times and Copa Iberoamericana once. He also won the UEFA European Cup twice. Before retiring in 1998 he played for Club Celaya for three years. He took this team into the finals of the national championship in Mexico and he was known as Gentleman of the Pitch for never receiving a red card in his career. In his entire senior career, Butragueno had 497 appearances (341 with Real Madrid) and scored 188 goals. He also received the Bravo award in 1985 and 1986 and the Bronze Ball in 1986 and 1987. In 1991 he was also awarded the Pichichi Trophy.

Emilio Butragueno’s international career was just as spectacular. He played for Spain’s national team in two World Cups in 1986 and 1990. His performance in the first one was impressive because he scored four goals in the Spain – Denmark match in the round of sixteen. In the same year he won the FIFA World Cup Silver Boot. He had 69 appearances for Spain and scored 26 goals.

After retiring from the field, Emilio Butragueno was the director of football, the vice president and the head of public relations for Real Madrid. A computer game named in his honor was released when he was still active, in 1988.
