Arena da Baixada

Home to Atlético Paranaense

The historic Estádio Joaquim Américo Guimarães, commonly referred to as Arena da Baixada is home to the famous Brazilian football club Atlético Paranaense. The stadium is owned and operated by the club. It is located in the city of Curitiba. Curitiba is one of the most significant cities in southern Brazil and is the capital of the state of Paraná. The city is the largest in southern Brazil in terms of population as well as economy. Though it is the home of Atlético Paranaense, it was built before the club was founded.

Consistently modern

Since its opening in 1914, the Αrena has undergone various renovations, demolitions and reconstructions. In the 1970s, the original stadium was shut down. Though it reopened in 1984, it was later demolished in 1997. The new stadium was completed in 1999. After its renovation in 1999, it’s widely regarded as one of Brazil’s most modern stadiums. It was the first stadium in Brazil to adopt the system of selling off the stadium naming rights. The rights were purchased by the Japanese company Kyocera and the stadium was known briefly as the Kyocera Arena. The naming rights were for a period of 2005 to 2008. After the contract expiry, it was not renewed and the stadium went back to its old name.

Welcoming the World Cup

As one of the newest and most modern stadiums in the country, the arena is to undergo a lesser amount of renovation than most other World Cup 2014 venues. The total cost of renovation is expected to be around R$183 million. Several improvements in facilities and addition of new rows of seats closer to the pitch are also included in the project. The current capacity of the stadium is 28,327 spectators. The renovation will see it increased to 41,000, all seated. A partnership has been agreed with the LA based facility management firm AEG to ensure that the stadium facilities are operated in an economic manner. Arena da Baixada will also be used as the venue for multiple purposes including concerts, conventions and festivals in the football off-season. The stadium is expected to host four group stage matches of the World Cup 2014.
