Estadio Nacional

Capital location

The World Cup would be incomplete without a match being played in the capital of the host nation. Thus, one of the playing venues for the World Cup will be Estádio Nacional de Brasília. Brasilia is the capital of Brazil and it is the biggest modern city that didn’t exist at the beginning of the 20th century. Rio de Janiero was the capital of Brazil till 1960 before Brasilia took it's place. It's central location and region neutrality were factors that affected the decision.

Estadio Nacional will stand in place of the older stadium Estádio Mané Garrincha, named after the Brazilian football legend Garrincha. The Mane Garrincha was opened in 1974. The demolition work was completed in 2010 to make way for the new stadium. The new stadium was also renamed at the same time as Estádio Nacional de Brasília and will see the seating capacity increased from 42,000 to 71,000.  The reconstruction involves dismantling the lower tier and retaining the upper tier while reducing the size of playing field so that the arena can be made a football specific one. It will also boast a new facade, metal roof and stands as well as lowered pitch offering spectacular views from every seat.

Grande

The stadium capacity will make it the second largest World Cup stadium. The project will cost around R$688 million and will be financed by the local government with no participation from the federal government. Estadio Nacional is one of the World Cup stadiums whose construction has proceeded smoothly. There have been minimum delays and strikes and the project is on track for completion in early 2013. The stadium is located in central Brasilia. It is hoped that Estadio Nacional will serve as a boost for the local teams. In addition to the 2014 World Cup, the stadium will also host matches from the 2013 Confederation Cup.

Big match stadium

Seven matches will be hosted in Estadio Nacional for the World Cup including a match involving the home nation, Brazil. Four group games are planned including games from Groups A, C, E and G. A round of 16 match a quarter final will also be hosted. The biggest match that will be played on this ground will be the third place playoff. After the World Cup, the ground will also used to host concerts and cultural events.
